Ontario Protects Firefighters with Historic $30 Million Fire Grant

Ontario has taken a ground-breaking step in safeguarding the health and safety of its firefighters with the introduction of a $30 million fire protection grant, the first of its kind in the province’s history. Spread over three years, this initiative has provided critical funding to 374 municipal fire departments, empowering them to invest in infrastructure and equipment aimed at reducing firefighter exposure to cancer-causing chemicals and other hazardous substances.
The Municipality of Central Huron is proud to announce that it is among the recipients of this transformative funding. With the support of the grant, Central Huron Fire Department has secured funding for advanced decontamination systems for each of its apparatus. These systems are integral to the department’s proactive strategy to reduce firefighters' exposure to carcinogens and other hazardous airborne substances encountered during and after fireground operations.
“Too many firefighters are impacted by occupational cancer every year,” said Fire Chief Jeff Lipskie. “This funding provides fire departments with vital infrastructure and equipment that will enhance firefighter safety and help protect those who selflessly serve our communities.”
